Easy Way to Put Patches on Backpack

Directions to Learn How to Sew a Patch to a Backpack

  1. Determine the location for your patch. It's best to avoid seams on the backpack because they are thick and harder to stitch through.
  2. Examine your patch for heat-activated backing. If none is present, proceed to step 10. If it is an iron on patch, follow steps 3 through 9 first.
  3. Spread the backpack on a hard, flat surface.
  4. Cover the application area with a cotton cloth.
  5. Press a hot iron down on the cloth to heat up the fabric.
  6. Take the cloth away and place the patch where you want it.
  7. Drape the cloth over the patch.
  8. Press straight down on the patch with a very hot iron for up to 1 minute.
  9. Lift iron away and check to see if patch is glued in place. If loose, cover and press with hot iron again.
  10. Select a thread color. Whether you want a matching or contrasting color is up to you.
  11. Pin your patch in place with one or more safety pins.
  12. Thread the needle with about 20 inches of thread.
  13. Hold the thread in the middle and make a loop with it.
  14. Push the loop through the eye of the needle.
  15. Leave about 3 to 4 inches of the loose ends of the thread hanging out one end.
  16. Working on the outside, push the needle through the edge of the patch and into the backpack material.
  17. If you have a thimble, wear it on your thumb to protect your skin as you guide the needle into the backpack.
  18. Pull the needle and thread through until you have a 1 inch loop of thread sticking out of the edge of the patch.
  19. Bring the needle from the inside of the bag up and through the edge of the patch.
  20. Pull the needle and thread through the loop.
  21. Gently pull the thread tight until the loop closes shut.
  22. Continue around the edge of the patch, stitching down and back up through the edge.
  23. After going all the way around the patch, you're ready to finish it with an overhand loop.
  24. When sending the needle from the outside of the bag to the inside, leave a small loop.
  25. Bring the needle back through from the inside and through the little loop.
  26. Pull snug and then repeat the overhand loop.
  27. After making three or four more overhand loop stitches, you have finished.
  28. Snip off the end of the thread on the inside of the bag.
